I had a weekend in the Lake Distict around Derwentwater, Wastwater and Ullswater and had some good light. New images will be going up on line shortly so keep wathing
Together with collegues John Devlen and Brian Jobson Mike presented their illustrated show to Consett Camera Cleb and Kirkby Moorside Photograpic Society. At both venues the shoe which is a mixture of photographs, anecdotes and AV went down a bomb. We are booked at Harlepool later in the year
Mikes image of Kettleness is featured on the cover of April 2012 Yorkshire Ridings Magazine and his image of the bridge over the River Wharf at Kettlewell is the cover of Yorkshire life Magazine
To coincide with a feature on the new David Hockney exhibition of his images of the wolds Yorkshire Life chose to use one of my wolds images on the cover of the March issue. The Yorkshire Wolds are a great location - not the easiest to photograph but the chalk landscape is different and the whole place has a feel of yesterday. Yorkshire Ridings Magazine have used one oy images of daffodils at Mount Grace Priory near Northallerton on their March cover. The daffodils at Mount Grace are really something to see and the priory is well worth a visit.
I had a re-visit to St Mary's Lighthouse at Whitley bay a few Sundays ago. It was pretty wild day especially when the tide covered the causeway. Unfortuately the strong wind blew the earlier cloud cover away leaving a pretty blank blue sky. So I decide to convert a few of the images to black and white and I think they look better. You can see the images by putting a search in for 'St Marys'. i also did a trip up the northern dales after the snow a week or so ago. Unfortunately it was only a light covering but there are a few new snow pictures to see in the latest images.
Mikes image of a steam engine at Goathland Station in winter snow is the cover of the February 2012 edition of Yorkshire Ridings Magazine and his images of the River Dove at Stillington is the cover of February 2012 Yorkshire Life. The Countryman magazine features an image of snowdrops at Mounts Grace Priory near Northallerton in the Country Lens feature.
Its well into January and still no snow - what a contrast with last year. Its good news for my stock images though as winter images have been used on the covers of the January 2012 editions of the Dalesman and Yorkshire Ridings Magazine. Living North Yorkshire edition has a spread of Yorkshire winter images which are virtually all mine.
Mike together with colleague photographers Brian Jobson and John Devlin are exhibiting their photography at the North York Moors Danby Centre from the 15th to 28th June 2011. Fifty six framed images and 150 mounted prints are available to view in the inspiration Gallery
The May 2011 edition of Yorkshire Life faetures on the cover one of my shots of the wonderful wild flower meadows of Swaledale. The shot taken near Thwaite includes bluebells and buttercups with the village and Kisdon Hill in the background.
At what seems a really lengthy lead in my book the 'Gardens at Castle Howard' is at last in the book shops. It contains 150 of my images of the estate through the seasons taken over a full year. Also there are sections on the Temple, Mausoleum, Statues, Atlas Fountain and the Rose Gardens. The introduction is by Chris Ridgway, Castle Howard's curator for over 25 years, and a foreword by the Rt. Hon. Simon Howard. I am really proud of this book and I am really pleased with many of the images I have captured showing this magnificent location at its best. The book costs £16.99 and is available from all good booksellers including Amazon
Living North in their April 2011 edition in the feature 'The Tide is Turning' have included a double page shot of sali boarding taken from the beach at Coatham Redcar as well as two shots taken of the beach at Saltburn
February is proving a good month for seeing my work in print. A shot of Lockwood reservoir near Guisborough has been used for the cover of Yorkshire Ridings Magazine. Yorkshire Life have used two cover images for their February editions. One of Hebden Bridge from Heptonstall Crags for their southerm edition and one of Kisdon Falls in Swaledale for their North Yorkshire Edition. In addition I have illustrated their feature on Leeds. Countryman Magazine have run a feature on English piers in their February edition and used a picture of Saltburn's pier in the cover.
The proofs of my latest book of phorography of the Castle Howard Estate have now been approved and the book should hit the bookshelves in April 2011. The introduction to the book is by Chris Ridgway curator at Castle Howard and a foreword by the Rt Hon Simon Howard
Gervase has just launched his latest book "Yorkshire Journey" published by the Dalesman price £17.99. This is essentially a large format picture book of Yorkshire Photography and Watercolours by Gervase's artist son Matthew, richly presented with Gervase's witty Yorkshire prose. Many of the photographs particularly of North Yorkshire subjects are mine. This is a lovely Yorkshire book which I am proud to have been associated with and well worth looking up at your local bookshop.
The tide and sunrise were right for a dawn visit last weekend. I was rewarded with one of the best sunrises I have seen this year. What luck. If you put a search in for "Saltwick dawn" you will see them. My friend Dave Smith accompanied me on this trip and was good to see the path down to the beach has been restored
It seems it's been a good year for poppies. My usual haunt on the Wolds near Thixendale haven't flowered this year but one I photographed near Sedgefield in County Durham seven years ago was a riot of colour again last week. A very large corn field with hedge to hedge poppies. I found a new one - not quiet as good - but still impressive near Hovingham in North Yorks. I passed one near Knaresborough a couple of weeks ago BUT no camera with me. A lesson there.
I returned to the Sedgefield one last Thursday to do a sunset shot but they had been sprayed and were dying. No longer good enough for a picture. Yesterday my friend John Devlin took me to a rape field he had found near Seamer, Scarborough last week which was hedge to hedge poppies but over the week they were well past their best.
My new poppy images are all up on the site now. Search for 'poppies' or 'poppyfield'. The latest ones come up first.
I've just returned from a week on Lake Como. Unfortunately the light was continually poor so I didn't achieve the photography I had hoped for. Its a beautiful part of italy with the fabulous lakeside towns and villages of Bellagio, Varenna and Menaggio where we stayed. My best few images will be on the web site in a week or two so look out for them
During 2008/9 Mike was commissioned to photograph the Castle Howard landscape. He is currently working with Dr Chris Ridgway Castle Howard's curator on a coffee table book of his photography. Anticipated publication date is late in 2010
All though this has been a very dry spring there has still been a good showing of bluebells. In addition to my usual bluebell haunt of Newton Woods near Roseberry Topping I have found good displays at Thorp Perrow, Swainby and Kildale
